We made 「一份最好的禮物」 (The Best Gift) for Teachers' Day — a message of thanks and well-wishes for the general education teachers whose dedication so often goes unseen.

The film set out to honor teachers' selfless dedication and persistence in the classroom, delivering a heartfelt gift through thanks spoken by the students themselves — so that on this special day, every teacher could feel the value and meaning of their work.

A Surprise Student Appearance, and the Most Sincere Thank-You

We had noticed that many general education teachers find students' muted reactions in class deeply discouraging. So we built the film around student thank-you videos and a surprise in-person appearance, letting teachers hear, firsthand, the appreciation their students had never voiced.

We wanted teachers to feel how deeply they had shaped their students — and the genuine surprise and emotion that unfolded on set gave the film much of its power.

Recording Guide: Helping Students Film Their Thank-You Videos

The students' thank-you videos are central to the film's narrative. To make sure every submission met production requirements, we prepared a detailed recording guide covering the following:

1. Upload and file naming

After recording, students uploaded their videos to the cloud before the deadline, with files named in the format "School & Department_Name" for easy sorting and editing.

2. Camera settings

We recommended shooting horizontally on a camera or phone, in HD or 4K for a sharp image, and using a tripod for a steadier frame.

3. Framing and wardrobe

Subjects should be centered and framed from the waist up, facing the camera directly. We also asked students to wear dark clothing and avoid all-white or finely patterned outfits, which can cause visual interference on camera.

4. What to include in the message

Each message opens with the basics — department, name, year, when they took the course, and the course title — then covers why they chose the course, what stood out, and what they took away from it, closing with thanks and well-wishes for the teacher.

5. A sample thank-you script

We also provided a sample script to help students structure their recordings and keep the content specific and complete.

With the guide in hand, students completed their recordings smoothly — saving the team time and ensuring the footage met our content and quality requirements.

Planning the Shoot: Capturing Real, Surprise-Filled Emotional Moments

To put the surprise on film, we planned the shoot quite differently from a standard interview. The goal was to let the surprise genuinely unfold on set — giving the film a real sense of presence and emotional resonance.

1. Timing the students' entrance precisely

Just as the teacher finished watching the video — still caught in the emotion of it — the students from the video quietly walked in. This "surprise within a surprise" drew out the teacher's most unguarded reactions and gave the film a striking emotional impact.

2. Capturing natural moments before the interview

Before each interview, our crew clipped on the teacher's lavalier mic and chatted casually, filming these seemingly behind-the-scenes moments. That natural conversation and preparation footage makes the film feel authentic — as if the viewer were right there in the room.

3. Keeping the set in the picture

We deliberately left lights, equipment, and other production details in frame, putting viewers on set with us. It heightens the sense of being there — and quietly sets the stage for the surprise.

4. Playing the surprise video on a teleprompter

While the teacher watched the students' thank-you video, we played it through a teleprompter so their eyes naturally met the lens. Viewers see every shift of emotion head-on, closing the distance between audience and film and deepening the emotional connection.

This approach gave the film its authenticity and emotional tension, letting viewers experience the warmth of each surprise as if they were there themselves.

Through this shoot, we set out to convey the students' deep gratitude to their teachers and to show the real value of general education — leaving everyone involved moved and warmed, and giving Teachers' Day a heartfelt gift of its own.
